NMDA, in conjunction with the New Mexico Beekeepers Association, is participating in a National Honeybee Survey. This national survey, described as the most comprehensive honey bee health survey ever conducted, will determine what parasites, diseases and pests are present in US honeybee colonies.
The primary objective of the survey is to look for potentially invasive exotic honey bee pests that are not known to occur in the US. In addition, the survey will provide important information to meet the goal of developing a long-term baseline picture of honey bee health. This epidemiological information will help guide future honey bee research and formulate recommendations to beekeepers to help them maintain healthy colonies.
Data generated as a result of the survey, along with data from limited surveys conducted in 2009 and 2010, will be included in the Bee Informed Partnership database.
