Went into the hive today.  Comb building is happening on the back bars, so we put them between some full bars.  Honey is being brought to the back topbars.  Did not see crystalized honey on the back bars, at least I don't think we did.  Went to check the front two bars and found some serious cross combing.  Could not raise them out of the hive.  When we did, one came loose from the topbar.  Looks like the only way to get to those bars is working from the back.  Didn't want to get too far into the hive and disturb the brood nest as our nights are still getting cold.  Just read that it is best to fix the cross comb problem before the serious brood building occurs, and that someone with experience and a second set of hands would be helpful.  :(

If anyone is interested in the limited # of Bear Fences available from NM Game & Fish, please send me a private message with your complete name, street address, and tel. #. I will submit the list in order received to Jerry after our March 23rd meeting in Alamo.

The dept.'s policy is that only one bear unit will be received / beekeeper until the demand has been met.

My understanding is that each bear unit provides a battery, solar charger, 150ft. of wire with preattached posts and a ground post

Just got off the phone with Jerry Radcliff (NM Game & Fish). He has requested that we NOT call him, but he confirms he has some units available for our southern area. He requests that we collect names/addresses for those wanting to receive a Bear unit at the meeting on the 23rd of March and forward that info.to him the following week. Either Rob or I will gather the names and contact Jerry on the following Monday. Jerry Radcliff will make ONE trip south and deliver the units in early April as his schedule allows.

I gave up screened bottoms. I simply use a series of 76mm screened vents. The screened bottoms seem to be dust collectors in the desert, and allow too much cold in during our windy winters.

 I personally feel genetics and management style makes a bigger impact on parasites than screened bottoms. Just my opinion.

Screened top/bottom boards:  Do you use them in the summer?  Do you think it makes a difference?

It might be easier to suck them up in the dark  - if you can reach them and not kill yourself on the ladder. Use a red flashlight.
