Bee-keeping and beneficial insect workshop

Beekeeping is a great hobby that can produce sweet results for those who take on the venture. New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service in Quay County is hosting a full-day workshop May 12 to give area enthusiasts the basics of beekeeping, whether they wish to keep a small beehive for pollination purposes or for honey production.

The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be held at NMSU's Agricultural Science Center at Tucumcari. There will also be a workshop and demonstration of how to identify and manage other pollinating insects. Pre-registration is required to attend the workshop. There is a $40 registration fee.

"We want participants to get a basic knowledge on what they need and how to begin keeping bees," said Tom Dominguez, Extension agricultural agent for Quay County. "If beekeeping isn't for them, then they can also learn how to manage the native landscape and cultivate plant material for naturally occurring pollinating insects, plus know how to identify and have a basic knowledge of bees and other pollinators in our area."

The main speaker at the workshop will be Les Crowder, who has more than 30 years experience with beekeeping and has been teaching the craft to others since 1983. In 2009, Crowder received the award for best instructor at the New Mexico Organic Farming conference.

During the workshop, Tess Grasswitz, an integrated pest management specialist with NMSU, will present information on  Beneficial Insects and Planting for pollinators.
Interested participants must register by May 1. The registration fee is payable on the day of the workshop. Lunch will be provided for attendees.

For more information on the workshop, contact Tom Dominguez at the Quay County Extension office at 575-461-0562. Call Bev Lake, at the Extension office, to register for the workshop.
